Southlake Carroll Percussion
The Dragon Band offers several ensemble performance opportunities for percussionists. These include the Marching Band Drumline and Front Ensemble, Dragon Indoor Percussion, and concert Percussion Ensembles.
The Dragon Marching Band Drumline and Front Ensemble consists of 33 percussion students (12 in the Front Ensemble, 21 on the field). As the "heartbeat" of the marching band, the group features prominently in every competition show, and competes in various drumline-only competitions during the fall marching season.
Carroll Indoor Percussion is a relatively new ensemble, established in the spring of 2014. Like the Carroll Winterguard, Carroll Indoor Percussion competes in various Indoor events from January through April, under the auspices of regional and national organizations such as Winter Guard International (WGI) and North Texas Colorguard Association (NTCA). The group's 2014 show, "PANIC" (an original composition by director David Walker), garnered the Bronze Medal at the 2014 NTCA Finals ... a nearly-unprecedented feat for a new ensemble in its inaugural year.
In 2016, their show "The Surge" took the bronze medal at the WGI Mid-South Regional Championships in Bowling Green, KY, which was the group's first appearance at a WGI Championship. "The Surge" also took the silver medal at the NTCA Championships. In 2017, Carroll Indoor Percusccion took first place at the NTCA Championships with their show "From Dust."
Percussion students also participate in Concert Percussion Ensembles, which compete at UIL Solo & Ensemble contests, as well as the statewide Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest in Austin each spring. Carroll Percussion ensembles have consistently earned Superior ratings both locally and at the state level. Members of Carroll's percussion groups have been recognized as "Outstanding Soloists" at TSSEC, including a string of seven consecutive years. In 2013, two members of the Carroll Percussion Department were named T.S.S.E.C. "Outstanding Soloists."
